Kitten Collars
Today it’s no exception that malls have a special “pets department”, with tools, (kitten) collars, play stuff, special food and everything you can imagine regarding pet stuff. We were at the mall last week. I always have to go to the pet shop and see the animals. We have two cats and two dogs, so I am not looking to buy; I just enjoy looking at animals as well as the pet merchandise. While I was in the pet shop a mother and daughter came in to purchase kitten collars. They told the sales clerk that they had three kittens that spent the majority of their time outdoors. They were concerned that the kittens would kill too many of the birds in the yard so they wanted kitten collars that had bells to warn the birds.
The clerk started showing the woman small leather kitten collars. The woman had stated that the kittens were growing fast so she wanted kitten collars that would expand with them. I usually do not get involved with other peoples business, but I was concerned about the leather kitten collars. I explained to the woman and the clerk that I have owned cats all my life and that if you were going to put a collar on them it was very important to use the collars that have a stretchy safety feature so the cat can break free if they get caught. A leather collar is more appropriate for a cat that spends time indoors and will not have as many opportunities to get caught by something. The store did have a number of safety kitten collars for the woman to choose from. She then asked about flea and tick kitten collars. The clerk of the pet store was very knowledgeable about this. She explained to the woman that flea and tick products cannot be used on cats until they are nine months old. She then suggested that the woman use the liquid products that are available through a veterinarian. The liquid is dropped between the shoulder blades on the back of the cat. The application is made once a month.
When the woman and her child left the store I apologized to the clerk about getting involved in her sale. She told me that she was glad that I had said something. She said that she has never owned a cat so she had not thought about the safety issues with the leather kitten collars.
The friend that I was shopping with came looking for me. She had gone to use the restroom while I was looking in the pet shop. She thought I had bought the entire store out with the length of time that I was gone. We left and continued our shopping trip.
